The U.S. Postal Service says 'tis the season to get scammed.
Thomas Gasser, postal inspector for the Charleston region, says overpayment scams are common this time of year with so much online or mail-order shopping.
"There are a lot of counterfeit money orders and cashier's checks out there," Gasser said.
A typical scam goes like this: Someone over-pays for something or just sends you a check. Then they ask you to deposit it and send them your own check or wire them the money.
Those checks are about as real as the prince from the small Middle Eastern country who wants you to help smuggle his fortune into the States.
