Former Miss America to speak about sex abuse

Darkness to Light, a Charleston-based nonprofit combating childhood sexual abuse, will host guest speaker Marilyn Van Derbur, Miss America 1958, who was sexually abused.

She will speak at Darkness to Light’s first Spring Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Van Derbur is the author of “Miss America by Day,” which chronicles her journey to becoming a survivor of sexual abuse.

She also speaks nationwide about sexual abuse prevention and recovery.

In 1993, she co-founded two national not-for-profit organizations, the American Coalition for Abuse Awareness and One Voice, both dedicated to public education and strengthening laws protecting victims of sexual abuse.

The Spring Luncheon will be held at Daniel Island Club, 600 Island Park Drive. For tickets, go to or call 513-1628.
