The Sophia Institute will host a workshop starting Friday that features Mark Nepo, a nationally known spiritual teacher, poet, story-teller, cancer survivor and author of 13 books, including the best-seller “The Book of Awakening.”

The workshop is based on Nepo’s new book, “Seven Thousand Ways to Listen,” which recently won the Books for Better Life Award for Best Spiritual Book of 2012.

A best-selling author and Oprah Winfrey favorite, Nepo has taught poetry and spirituality for more than 35 years.

The Sophia Institute workshop will run Friday to next Sunday at Gatch Hall in Charleston. During the workshop, Nepo plans to tap into ancient and contemporary stories, poetry, journaling and dialogue to invite participants to befriend their own stories and listen for their own wisdom.

Nepo will discuss the work of listening on the three levels of friendships: the work of being, the work of being human and the work of love.

In 2010, Winfrey chose Nepo’s “The Book of Awakening” as one of her Ultimate Favorite Things for her farewell season, launching it to the top spot on The New York Times best-seller list.

In 2010 and 2011, Winfrey interviewed Nepo as part of her SiriusXM Radio show, “Soul Series.” Winfrey also has written about Nepo twice in her O! Magazine.

Nepo serves on the faculty and National Advisory Board of The Sophia Institute, a local not-for-profit educational institute that cultivates wisdom, mindfulness and the conscious feminine and masculine.
