Church to honor retiring leader

The Rev. Dr. McKinley Washington is retiring as leader of Edisto Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. Dr. McKinley Washington Jr. will be retiring from Edisto Presbyterian Church, and the congregation will celebrate his 50 years of pastoral service and civic leadership with several events.

There will be a banquet at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Baptist Hill High School gymnasium, 5117 Baptist Hill Road, Yonge’s Island. The event will feature guest speaker U.S. Rep. James Clyburn. For tickets, which are $25, call Gwen Barrett at 869-2589 or Cassandra Bligen at 412-8682.

Family and Fun Day will be 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the Edisto Island Community Center, 1717 S.C. Highway 174. Admission is free.

There will be a retirement service at 3 p.m. May 27 in the Omni Building at the church, 2154 Highway 174, with a speech by the Rev. Dr. James Herbert Nelson, director of the Office of Public Witnesses of the Presbyterian Church USA.

In addition to his pastoral position, Washington spent 16 years in the state House of Representatives, 10 years in the Senate and eight years at the Employment Security Commission.
