Camera Works Cafe hosts portraiture workshop

Mark Stetler and Hitnes in the studio

Photographer Mark Stetler shoots a portrait of Italian street artist Hitnes, whose work will be shown later this year at the Halsey Institute for Contemporary Art.

Camera Works Cafe will hold its first workshop, “Art of the Portrait,” 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at Redux Contemporary Art Center, 1056 King St. The cost is $300 per person and registration is required. Email

The workshop will include discussions about aspects of portraiture: knowing your subject, finding a style, composing and lighting shots, formatting and mastering the technical components.

Participants will interview then photograph fellow workshop photographers. They are expected to bring a camera, a favorite portrait example and three outfits that help convey personality. They will work with digital and film cameras in a variety of lighting scenarios.

The next Camera Works Café meet-up, which is free and open to all, is 6-8 p.m., Feb. 22, at Redux.
