For anyone who wants a sneak peek at some of the performers in this year's Piccolo Spoleto Festival, there will be a preview at 4 p.m. today at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 3871 Betsy Kerrison Parkway, on Johns Island.
Billed as "Classical Meets Jazz," the group will explore repertoire that lies within and between the two genres.
Locals will recognize some of the names: violinist Yuriy Bekker, concertmaster of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra; trumpeter Charlton Singleton, leader of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra; and Leah Suarez, one of our noted jazz singers.
Others scheduled to appear on the program include soprano Jill Terhaar Lewis and her saxophonist-husband Robert Lewis, percussionist Ron Wiltrout, pianists Ghadi Shayban and Gerald Gregory, sax player Mark Sterbank, violinist Micah Gangwer and bassist Jeremy Wolf.
It's a veritable classical-jazz mashup featuring music, reimagined, by Ned Rorem, Stephen Foster, George Bizet and Brad Mehldau, as well as selections for the classic jazz songbook and one straight-ahead classical piece for two violins and piano by Maurice Moszkowski.
The preview is a collaboration between the city of Charleston's Office of Cultural Affairs and the town of Kiawah Island's Arts Council.
Tickets are complimentary and can be found at the Visitors Center at Kiawah Island Town Hall or on a first-come, first-served basis at the church.
