GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Citadel showed signs of life by scoring seven runs in the ninth inning Sunday, but it wasn't enough to avoid a sweep at UNC Greensboro.
The Spartans scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth for a 12-11 victory that put the Bulldogs (20-32, 8-19) on the brink of missing the Southern Conference baseball tournament at their own Riley Park.
The Citadel, which has lost eight straight (its longest losing streak since 1987), now stands in 10th place in the SoCon, a game behind Wofford and Western Carolina, tied for eighth at 9-18. The top eight teams make the SoCon tourney on May 25-29.
The Citadel finishes the regular season next weekend with three games at Western Carolina, which dropped two of three at Furman this weekend. Wofford hosts UNCG in its final series.
Down 10-3 on Sunday, The Citadel got one run in the eighth when Drew DeKerlegand doubled to deep left to score Grant Richards. William Ladd was hit by a pitch to lead things off in the final frame and Justin Mackert reached on an error. Matt Simonelli walked to load the bases with no outs.
After a pitching change, a wild pitch and a two-run single up the middle by Brad Felder cleared the bases. After a groundout, a walk and another pitching change, Joe Jackson roped a single through the right side to score Felder. A base hit to right by DeKerlegand loaded the bases for Nick Orvin, hitting in three hole for the first time in his career.
Orvin's sac fly to center scored Richards to cut the lead to one with two outs, and Ladd delivered a base knock up the middle to score pinch runner Josh Pless and DeKerlegand to give the Bulldogs a short-lived 11-10 lead.
TJ Clarkson came on for the Bulldogs in the ninth and Drew Gehringer blooped a base hit to right to start things off. A sac bunt moved him to second and an RBI single to right by Cody Walker tied the game as Gehringer scored on a close play at the plate.

A base hit by Mackert scored Orvin, a sac fly by Simonelli plated Ladd and Felder narrowly a missed a two-run homer when he crushed a ball to deep right that went for a triple, scoring Mackert to make it 4-3. A base hit by Crawford would turn into a run in the bottom of the fourth when Felder mishandled the ball in center, allowing Crawford to move to third and score on a sac fly by Spleth.
Things unraveled in the fifth when Quinones reached on a base hit and moved to third on a hit and run by Bobby Martin to put runners on the corners. A sac fly by Trevor Edwards scored Quinones and Brindle then reached on an error by shortstop Legare Jones. A single by Walker scored Martin, and a failed pickoff attempt at first that Mackert mishandled allowed Brindle to score to make it 8-3.
