Jazz Artists of Charleston is sponsoring a special event to honor the late Jack McCray, who helped establish the organization and who long celebrated jazz and its Charleston connections.
The Jack McCray Tribute Concert is a benefit scheduled for 4-7 p.m. Oct. 7 at Memminger Auditorium, 56 Beaufain St.
Guests are encouraged to match their ticket price, or exceed it, with a contribution to the Jack McCray Memorial Fund. Contributions will be accepted through Dec. 31.
The fund benefits the missions of Jazz Artists of Charleston, the Charleston Jazz Orchestra, Charleston Jazz Initiative and Jack McCray Literary Fund.
McCray, who for years worked at The Post and Courier as a copy editor, reporter and columnist, was a recognized man about town with a gentlemanly manner and keen sense of style.
He was skillful at cultivating strong bonds with colleagues and friends, and conveying a clear vision of culture and community at the center of which stood music, fellowship and understanding.
McCray died Nov. 9 last year at 64.
The tribute concert will feature the Charleston Jazz Orchestra, a big band led by Charlton Singleton, and special guest vocalist Rene Marie.
Reserved seating is available in floor risers and the balcony for $25. Table seating costs $50-$250 per seat. Tables seat six.
