Michael Mercurio, author of “A Charleston Yankee,” will have a book signing 6-9 p.m. today at 139B Market St.

Mercurio is a New York native and graduate of the College of Charleston currently living in Las Vegas. “A Charleston Yankee” is his first novel. Its story of love, betrayal and death is set in the racially and politically heated atmosphere of the 1960s.

Rowman and Littlefield Publishers’ “Studies in Jazz” series will soon include its 72nd volume called “Rhythm Is My Beat: Jazz Guitar Great Freddie Green and the Count Basie Sound,” by Green’s son, Alfred Green.

A quiet but key figure in big band jazz, Freddie Green was a product of the Jenkins Orphanage Band in Charleston. His rhythmic guitar style was highly influential.

The book will be available from online and traditional book retailers in August.
