The Charleston Chapter of Hadassah and the Charleston Jewish Community Center will host author Maggie Anton, who will speak about her new book “Enchantress: A Novel of Rav Hisda’s Daughter.”

The event is 7 p.m. Feb. 3 at the JCC, 1645 Raoul Wallenberg Blvd. The cost is $5.

“Enchantress” is published by Plume Books and is available as a $17 trade paperback (it’s also available as an e-book).

Anton is a Talmud scholar and expert in Jewish women’s history who has written the historical fiction series “Rashi’s Daughters” and “Rav Hisda’s Daughter.” She has spent years researching what the Talmud says about sorcery, in addition to Jewish amulets, Babylonian incantation bowls and magic manuals from the Cairo Geniza. She was a 2012 finalist for the Jewish Book Award.

She has put to use ancient sources in “Enchantress,” illuminating life in fourth-century Babylonia.
