RUSSELLVILLE — Family members of Brittany Aigoro said they are shocked and hurt to learn that her fiance was one of the four men arrested and charged with killing the 21-year-old woman early Monday.
Berkeley County sheriff's deputies charged Aveon Goodman with murder on Wednesday. Helen Brown, Aigoro's grandmother, said Goodman was with the family Wednesday when deputies came to talk to him. She thought of him as a grandson, not a suspect.
"I took him in as my grandson,' Brown said. "It's just hurtful. My daughter mentored him and took care of him. She let him use her car to look for jobs. We just loved the boy."
Aigoro was shot to death and 25-year-old Kendrick Shirer was shot in the side about 12:30 a.m. Monday. Several people were inside Shirer's mother house at 1510 Russellville Road when someone knocked on the door. When Shirer looked out the door someone peppered the house with bullets, striking Aigoro in her upper left back, authorities said.
Investigators say robbery is the apparent motive.
Goodman, 23, is expected to appear in bond court tonight with three co-defendants: Sheldon Goodman, 22; Brandon Jenkins, 22 and Joshua Jenkins, 24.
Brown said she hopes all remain in jail.
"We're all trying to make sense of it," she said. "We don't understand it. It's too much to carry."
