SPARTANBURG — A former South Carolina church deacon has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for attempting to rob a bank.

More than 100 supporters crowded into a courtroom Thursday in Spartanburg as U.S. District Judge Henry Floyd sentenced Bruce Windsor.

The father of four pleaded guilty in October to federal bank robbery and weapons charges. He faced up to 25 years in prison.

His family has blamed the financial meltdown for his failed attempt in February. But relatives said Thursday that Windsor has been suffering from bipolar disorder.

Prosecutors say the former youth soccer coach donned a mask and wig, entered a Greenville bank and pointed a gun at bank workers, demanding cash.

He’s expected to go on trial for state kidnapping charges in early 2010.
