An eight-vehicle pileup on Interstate 26 east sent four people to local hospitals on Thursday morning, authorities said.
The wreck happened about a quarter mile before the Aviation Avenue overpass around 6:15 a.m. Crews cleaned up the debris around 9 a.m. and re-opened the lanes of traffic.
North Charleston firefighters rescued motorcyclist who had been pinned underneath the wreckage, Battalion Chief Eric Phillips said. Three other people were transported to Roper Northwoods and Medical University hospitals.
Charleston County EMS Director Don Lundy said the motorcyclist had serious trauma injuries, but was in stable condition. Three other people were stable and had less serious injuries.
The Highway Patrol was investigating. The collision caused large traffic backups and authorities re-routed traffic onto Rivers Avenue. Phillips said crews were finishing the crash-site cleanup at 9 a.m.
