A Moncks Corner man has been charged after a fatal wreck on Interstate 26 Tuesday afternoon.

Samuel Thompson Jr., 60, of Old Black Oak Road, Moncks Corner, was charged with felony DUI, Charleston Police Department spokesman Charles Francis said. Thompson is being held at the Cannon Detention Center. At a bond hearing Wednesday, Charleston County Magistrate Linda Lombard denied bond on the charge.

The two-car accident happened about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday in the eastbound lanes of I-26 near exit 219. Thompson lost control of his vehicle and struck another car, Francis said. Traffic was diverted onto the Rutledge Avenue exit while authorities worked the accident.

The driver of the other car was 78-year-old Margaret Deas of Charleston, said Kelly Kraus, a Charleston County deputy coroner. Deas died at Medical University Hospital about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday of internal injuries, Kraus said.
