NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Dozens of residents of the Barefoot Resort in North Myrtle Beach are worried about plans to close a swing bring for almost two months for painting.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported ( ) the bridge linking the resort and the city business district will close in November.

Residents at a meeting Monday worried about a repeat of the 2009 wildfires that destroyed dozens of homes. They also said it will take longer for residents, many retirees, to get medical help.

The closing will force residents to detour 10 miles to get to grocery stores and other services.

City manager Mike Mahaney said the city decided to close the bridge after considering other alternatives. Officials say in case of a major emergency, it could reopen in about eight hours.
