Dorchester County deputies are searching for an inmate who gave them the slip during a visit to Summerville Medical Center on Tuesday morning.
Avery Clark, 21, had been in custody for a parole violation stemming from a non-violent burglary when he left his assigned room around 2 a.m., a release states.
Clark was admitted to the hospital around 10 p.m. the night before for fainting spells and back pain. Before being taken there, a Dorchester County jail nurse had recommended he seek treatment.
Dorchester County detention staff was assigned to guard and monitor the inmate during his hospital stay, the release states. Early the next morning, Clark asked to use the bathroom in his assigned room. When a detention officer standing watch went to check on him, he had disappeared from the bathroom.
Deputies searched the hospital grounds and perimeter without finding any trace of the inmate, the release states. Clark was last seen wearing black and white striped prisoner garb. The investigation is ongoing and the detention officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome.
Clark is 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighs about 175 pounds and has a noticeable cleft palate, deputies said.
