William Dickerson has been sentenced to death for the 2006 murder of Gerard Roper.
It was the first time the death penalty has been give in Charleston County in more than a decade. The last death penalty case tried in Charleston County was in 2002 but did not result in a death sentence.
Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said she was grateful for the verdict and said it was merited because of the horrible nature of the crime.
Wilson said it's an important day for the community but "it's not a day of celebration."
Gerard Roper's mother, Shareen Roper, said she had faith in the system and the verdict came as a relief.
"I just want to say thank you to the solicitor's office and everyone who helped get this guilty verdict," she said.
She also reached out to Dickerson's family. "I know they've taken a loss just like i have and it's not a great feeling."
