EDISTO BEACH — Swimming warnings are in place for two small swaths of the oceanfront in this town.
Advisories have issued for 100 feet of beach in either direction from the end of Ebbtide Street and 100 feet in either direction from the end of Yacht Club Road, according to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. The advisories mean people should avoid swimming in the area.
Wading collecting shells or fishing is OK, but people should not put their heads underwater or put open wounds in the water. High fecal bacteria counts have been recorded at both sites. Fecal bacteria is a neutral term for what essentially is animal and human waste. Stormwater runoff dumps the bacteria into the water.
