Deputies looking for bank fraud suspect

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for help in locating a man suspected of identity theft and bank fraud.

An investigator for SunTrust Bank told deputies on Monday that a ring of identity thieves was operating in the area, according to an incident report.

The investigator said a man used a Georgia driver’s license issued in the name of Jody A. Stephens to withdraw $2,000 from a branch office inside the Bi-Lo store on Bees Ferrry Road in West Ashley. The withdrawal took place shortly before 10 a.m. on Saturday, the report said.

The sheriff’s office released a surveillance photo taken at the bank branch office inside the Bi-Lo store.

Arrest warrants have been issued charging Demond L. Copeland, 28, of Tallahassee, Fla., with financial identity fraud and bank fraud. He is described as a black man, 5 feet 7 inches tall, 245 pounds. According to the incident report, the Copeland tried to use the phony identification cards later Saturday in Goose Creek.
