Deputies are canvassing James Island this evening after a witness saw three men pull a young woman on St. James Drive into their car and drive off.

"We don't know if it's a kidnapping or abduction, but we're treating it as such," said Capt. Eric Watson, public information officer for the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

Watson said a witness called 911 at 4:40 p.m. and said a woman was walking near 2190 St. James Drive when a white car, possibly a Lexus, stopped next to her.

The witness reported that one of the three men in the car jumped out, grabbed the woman by the arm and dragged her into the back seat of the car, the witness said. The car then drove off toward Maybank Highway.

Watson said the witness described the woman as white, in her 20s and about 5 feet 6 inches tall. She was wearing flip flops, and one of them was left at the scene. The witness said the men in the car were black. Watson said deputies are trying to get more details this evening.

St. James Drive is in the Riverland Terrace neighborhood.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 202-1700.
