ROCK HILL — Winthrop University’s new fundraising campaign is gathering momentum with the announcement of a $2 million donation from a graduate and her husband.
The university announced the donation on Tuesday. Betty Morgan Holcombe and her husband, Milton Holcombe, earmarked the donation for the construction of an alumni center.
The couple are already significant contributors to the university, funding three endowed scholarships.
Last month, the university announced a new fundraising effort called “Distinction: The Campaign for Winthrop,” in a bid to bring in $50 million for the school.
Winthrop says it’s only the second fundraising campaign in the university’s 125-year history. The school raised $31 million about a decade ago.
