GREENWOOD — Greenwood County sheriff’s deputies say a man who said he was robbed of his donation kettle at gunpoint while ringing a bell for the Salvation Army took the money himself.

Investigators told The Index-Journal of Greenwood ( ) that 45-year-old Robert Lee Belcher Jr. was arrested Tuesday and charged with petit larceny and filing a false police report.

Deputies say Belcher told officers he was ringing the bell outside a store around 6 p.m. Dec. 9 when two men came up with a gun and demanded the donations.

Investigators say Belcher was hesitant to write down a statement and surveillance video showed him take the kettle, walk to a car just out of view, then return without the kettle and call police.

It wasn’t clear if Belcher had an attorney.
