Wando’s Compton honored

The Optimist Club of Charleston selected Wando track and cross country star Georgia Compton as its athlete of the year.

The Optimist Club honors local female athletes for their achievements in academics, athletics and community service.

Ellie James, a basketball and volleyball player for Bishop England, was the first runner-up. West Ashley’s Dekeiya Cohen, who competes in basketball, volleyball and track, was the second runner-up.

The Optimist volleyball all-star team includes Natalie Tucker, Wando; Mackenzie Lesemann, Wando; Christine Quinn, Ashley Hall; James, Bishop England; Julia McAvoy, Porter-Gaud; and Lexis Meyer, Porter-Gaud. Alexis Glover of Wando is coach of the year.

The basketball all-star team includes Cohen, West Ashley; Michelle Boykin, Bishop England; Mary Harriet Moore, Bishop England; Jhanice Stokes, West Ashley; and Ashley Fields, Goose Creek. Maria Williams of West Ashley is the coach of the year.

The Optimist track and field all-star team includes Michelle Lussier, Bishop England; Jasmine Quinn, Fort Dorchester, Raven Saunders, Burke; and Sarah Lee, Wando. David Lee of James Island is the coach of the year.

The rosters for the North-South all-star events in soccer, golf and tennis were announced.

The North-South soccer matches are June 23 at Blackbaud Stadium. Local players named to the boys South team include Jonathan Glenn, Academic Magnet; Mateo Gomez, Bishop England; Charlie Heffron, Wando; Alan Hernandez, Stall; Alistair Jones, Wando; Mack Koewler, Academic Magnet; Justin Overstreet, Stratford; Ross Rogers, Bishop England; and Nick Smillie, James Island.

Ed khouri will coach the South boys team.

Local players named to the girls South team include Anna Davis, Colleton County; Grace Gore, Wando; Megan Hunt, Academic Magnet; Madison Jones, West Ashley; Brandon Key, Berkeley; Molly Moriarty, Bishop England; and Hannah Ross, Wando.

Three players made the South all-star golf team: Jeremy Grab, Bishop England; Deej Elder, Fort Dorchester; and Cullen Baldwin, West Ashley.

Zac Dye of Berkeley made the South all-star tennis team.

The South Carolina Baseball Coaches Association released its all-state teams, and six local players were honored.

Zack Madden and Cameron Garrett of state-runner-up Bishop England were named to the Class AA team. Mike Delee of Woodland was also a Class AA pick.

Zach Gonzales of Berkeley was named to the Class AAA team.

Jonathan Sabo of West Ashley and Cody Smith of Goose Creek were named to the Class AAAA team.

Former Wando player Nick Ciuffo was named the Class AAAA player of the year after leading Lexington to the Class AAAA state title.

The coaches in Region 6-AA announced their all-region softball and baseball teams.

Softball champion Bishop England led the way with five players: Eran Artigues, Stephanie Johnson, Gabby Pinillos, Anna Marie Corder and Sophie Berg.

Battery Creek’s picks were Augusta Schubert, Autumn Gravel and Olivia Nolan.

Academic Magnet’s picks include Laura Fleming, Katelyn Hills and Choral Linhart.

Lakeisha Gerald of Burke, Courtney Ardis of Woodland, Jazzmine Dukes of Garrett Tech and Tylash Rivers of Ridgeland-Hardeeville round out the team.

In baseball, Woodland led the way with Mike Delee, Kyle Way, Drake Knight, Ryan Troutman and Ty Gaddist.

Bishop England’s picks include Zack Madden, Tradd Lowman and Harrison Boals.

Battery Creek’s selections are Thomas Smith and Michael Jenkins.

The rest of the team includes Malik Scott, North Charleston; Raye’Kon Jones, Burke; Tyler Jones, Ridgeland-Hardeeville; and Will Stephenson, Academic Magnet.
