Kate Rose Higgins of Charleston earned the second alternate spot in U.S. Women's Open sectional qualifying at Carolina Trace Country Club in Sanford, N.C., on Thursday. Higgins had a two-round total of 148, and it took a score of 143 to advance to the U.S. Women's Open.

Higgins, the valedictorian at First Baptist School, is headed to the University of South Carolina on a golf scholarship. Last summer, Higgins won the Women's South Carolina Golf Association Junior Championship at Yeamans Hall and the Beth Daniel Junior Azalea at the Country Club of Charleston.

Moore second in Hurricane

Jackson Moore of Isle of Palms finished second in the boys 13-15 age group in the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour's Bartram Trail Junior Classic held in Augusta. Moore posted a two-day total of 142, while Grant Waggoner of North Charleston finished third in boys 13-15 at 143.

Hubbard wins SJGT

Richard Hubbard of Mount Pleasant was the overall boys winner (14-19) at the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour event held at the University of Florida, shooting 69-73--142.
