A regional qualifier for the U.S. Golf Association's Mid-Amateur Championship will be played Wednesday at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek. Seventy-eight players age 25 and older will be gunning for a spot in the tournament, which will be played Sept. 25-30 at Atlantic Golf Club in Bridgehampton, N.Y. Last year's U.S. Mid-Am was played at Kiawah Island Club's Cassique Course, with Nathan Smith winning.
Local golfers entered in the tournament include: Bert Atkinson, Frank Ford III, Todd Fox, Patrick Mallard, Whitten Meares, Randall Teegarden and Jim Young, all of Charleston; John Belicka, Robert Bovender, Roy Neal, Thomas Sack, Tre Sheppard, Chris Sigler and Adam Walker, all of Mount Pleasant; Scott Koenig of Johns Island; Paul Lyons of Daniel Island; and Mathew Lake of North Charleston.
Thompson fifth in AJGA event
Elizabeth Thompson of Charleston finished fifth in the American Junior Golf Association's Webb Simpson AccuSport Championship played in Clemmons, N.C., shooting rounds of 80-72-68--220, five shots behind winner Andrea Unson of Murieta, Calif. Richard Hubbard of Mount Pleasant was fifth in the boys division with 67-74-68--209, four shots behind winner Chad Cox of Charlotte.
Sim cracks $1 million
Australia's Michael Sim, who was the top money winner on the Nationwide Tour last year and finished second in the Nationwide Tour Championship at Daniel Island Club, is the first one of the 25 players to earn their 2010 PGA Tour cards to reach $1 million in earnings this year on the PGA Tour. Sim finished tied for third at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., winning $244,800 to boost his 2010 winnings to $1,098,463. Derek Lamely, fourth on last year's money list, has won $949,229, and Blake Adams, third last year, has won $928,923. The 25 Nationwide graduates have collectively earned $10,348,349.
