The Buck's Pizza King Mackerel Tournament scheduled next Friday-Saturday out of Edisto Marina has grown remarkably in only its second year of existence. This year's event is expected to draw close to 100 boats, a giant leap over the inaugural event when 40 boats participated.
"Fishing has been somewhat off this year and there are a lot of boats needing points to qualify for the nationals," tournament director Darrin Moore said of the Southern Kingfish Association-sanctioned tournament.
"We're expecting close to 100 boats, if not more. We've got boats all up and down South Carolina and Georgia"
The tournament is a one-day (Saturday) one-fish event. Final registration will take place from 3-7:30 p.m. Friday at Big Bay Park adjacent to Edisto Marina. Anglers also can contact Moore at (803) 622-7009. The entry fee is $300 per boat. Based on 100 entries, first place is scheduled to pay $10,000. Fishing begins at 6 a.m. Saturday, with the scales open from 3-5 p.m.
Moore said approximately 60 vendors and sponsors will be on hand for the event, and the Edisto Chamber of Commerce is turning into a festival with music Friday night as well as music by the Catalinas and a shag contest Saturday.
"It's food, family and fun, just a good time," Moore said, adding that a food drive for the Edisto Island Food Pantry also will be taking place, with collection boxes at the tournament site.
The SKA Nationals will be held Nov. 2-7 out of Fort Pierce, Fla.
