COLUMBIA — Clemson University is seeking $5 million from the 2012-13 state budget to hire 86 faculty members.

University president James Barker asked a House budget-writing panel on Wednesday for $12 million in additional money for recurring costs. That includes $5 million for the new hires, as the university continues its new mantra of divesting to invest.

Barker says the university has eliminated 550 positions over the last three years through buy-out offers and normal attrition. He says there were no layoffs.

Barker says the 86 new positions will boost the university’s four focus areas: health, energy, environmental sustainability and transportation.

Barker also asked for $46 million in one-time money for building programs, mostly to renovate two of the campuses’ oldest buildings and other maintenance needs.
