Citadel public safety officers are investigating the theft of more than $5,000 worth of computers and other electronics from inside the rooms of eight cadets on Tuesday.

The cadets told officers that they left their rooms at the Murray Barracks to take their final exams about 2 p.m. and then left campus that night without locking their doors to attend several scheduled events celebrating the end of the year. When they returned about 1 a.m. Wednesday, the cadets reported the thefts of four laptops, two iPods, sunglasses and $350 in cash, according to an incident report released on Friday.

The report says the day-shift tactical officers might have left their posts early that day, which meant that no one was at the gate checking incoming or outgoing cadets for a short period.

The officer reported smelling alcohol on all of the victims. Mark Brandenburg, general counsel for The Citadel, declined to say whether any of the victims were disciplined for alcohol.

He said investigators declined to discuss the case because it's an active investigation.
