COLUMBIA — The director of the Central Intelligence Agency is scheduled to speak in Columbia.
Furman University says David Petraeus will address a luncheon today honoring state Democratic Rep. James Smith of Columbia and BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina board chairman Ed Sellers.
Petraeus was sworn in last September as the 20th director of the CIA. The former four-star general retired from the Army a week earlier after 37 years.
Petraeus is widely credited with rescuing a failing U.S. war in Iraq, soaring to public acclaim in 2007-08 with his surprising success in reversing an escalation of insurgent violence in Iraq.
He is speaking at an annual awards presentation sponsored by Furman’s Riley Institute. The awards for excellence in legislative and civic leadership are named after former state House Speaker David Wilkins.
