Race to be held for Tywanza Sanders, youngest victim of Emanuel AME Church shooting

  • Updated

Friends and loved ones of Tywanza Sanders, the youngest person killed in the Emanuel AME Church shooting, will race on March 11 to raise money for scholarships to honor him.

The third annual Doughnut Dash run/walk is organized by Race 4 Achievement Inc. and the Charleston Jewish Community Center Without Walls.

Organizers invite the public to race for Sanders, 26, who was known for his big smile, deep faith and compassionate spirit.

“Wanza was a great man. He was a good friend and a tremendous soul,” said Dominique Gray, co-founder of Race 4 Achievement.

The nonprofit funds scholarships and organizes clothing drives, school supplies drives, free SAT/ACT tutoring and other programs. Gray is among its founders — all Sanders’ close friends, who also graduated from James Island Charter High.

Race proceeds will fund at least three $1,000 scholarships for seniors at James Island Charter High, Burke High and West Ashley High.

“The end goal is to have scholarships in Wanza’s name at every high school in Charleston County,” Gray said.

The race is named for Krispy Kreme doughnuts, where Sanders once worked. It is a major sponsor of the annual event, which has raised more than $5,000 in scholarships.

This year's race begins at 7 a.m. March 11 at South Windermere Center in West Ashley. Organizers expect more than 500 runners and walkers will take part.

Registration costs $15 for children ages 10 to 15, $25 for individual adults and $20 per person on a team.
