SPARTANBURG — A Chesnee man has been sentenced to 21 years in prison after admitting to using marijuana and alcohol when he caused a wreck that killed a 69-year-old man.
Prosecutor Barry Barnette says 31-year-old James Lee McKelvey was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to felony driving under the influence with a death.
Authorities say McKelvey caused the April wreck that killed Olin Ridings of Chesnee. The Highway Patrol says McKelvey was driving about 60 mph when he slammed into the back of Ridings’ truck, which was at a stop sign.
Prosecutors say McKelvey admitted to smoking marijuana, and his blood alcohol level was .105. The legal limit in South Carolina is .08.
Barnette says McKelvey has previous convictions for DUI, possession of marijuana and felony DUI with great bodily injury.
