Put on those boogie woogie shoes

The 11th annual Charleston Beach Music and Shag Festival will celebrate Lil’ Redd’s 40 years of performing with The Tams on Sunday.

“I love beach music. I always have and I always will.”

The Embers had it right ... there’s nothing like some good old-fashioned beach music to get your toes tappin’. It’s not required to have mastered the six-count, eight-step Carolina Shag that originated along the Grand Strand in order to attend this special event. The Beach Music and Shag Preservation Society of South Carolina will host the 11th annual Charleston Beach Music and Shag Festival, featuring Joe Pope & The Tams, The Summerdaze Band, DJ Juan Gualda out of Florida and MC/DJ Butch Halpin out of North Carolina, in celebration of Lil’ Redd’s 40 years on stage.

Redd began performing with his father, Charles Pope, and uncle Joe Pope and The Tams when he was 6 years old. The family tradition continues as his son and two nephews now take the stage with them.

To top it off, Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg has officially proclaimed July 31 as Charleston Beach Music and Shag Festival Day. There will be a full bar and food, shag shoe sales and additional vendors, so no need to bring a cooler. Get yourself out from under the boardwalk, grab yourself a Carolina girl and get ready to wiggle a little as you remember those Myrtle Beach days.
