Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival

Celebrating its ninth year, the annual Sweetgrass festival is all about celebrating the Gullah-Geechee cultural heritage and provides “the most extensive showcase of sweetgrass baskets in the Lowcountry area.” The event is highlighted by 30 sweetgrass artists selling their creations, basketmaker demonstrations, additional artists and crafters, singing and storytelling reflecting the Gullah-Geechee culture and more. In addition, 15 Lowcountry restaurants and food vendors will be on-site selling authentic Gullah cuisine, classic barbecue, fish, chicken and beverages. The family-friendly event, which means no alcohol, will include a waterslide and additional kids’ activities. The festival kicks off with a special event Friday night at Memorial Waterfront Park called The “Real” Taste of Gullah. From 6-10 p.m., attendees can enjoy Gullah cuisine, live music, a talk on traditions of the Gullah culture, a special fashion show featuring sweetgrass hats and purses, and more. The Friday event costs $50 and beer and wine will be available for purchase.

Piccolo Spoleto Sand Sculpting Competition

Ever dream of being an artist? Here’s your chance! Piccolo Spoleto’s popular annual Sand Sculpting Competition is back for another year of amazing displays all built of beach. With prizes awarded in the adult’s event (ages 21 and over), the family event (at least one adult and one young adult or child), the young adult’s event (ages 15-20), the children’s event (ages 14 and under), best architectural, most creative, best in show and overall, there are tons of chances for your work to be noticed. This special event is celebrating its 25th anniversary, so expect the competition to be fierce. Open to anyone who wants to participate, it serves as a great way to spend a day.

When: 9 a.m.-noon Saturday; registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

Iron Chef Charleston

“Allez Cuisine!” Iron Chef is coming to Charleston for a corned beef battle for charity. Chef Marie McGuirk, representing her catering company Cardinal Events and Catering, will take on chef Michael Finnell, representing Charleston Cooking for Couples. Each chef will have to prepare appetizer, entree and dessert courses using corned beef, which will then be judged by local “celebrities.” The event will include complimentary appetizers and a silent auction. The charities benefiting from the cooking contest and auction are Noah’s Arks Rescue (for severely injured dog Freckles’ surgeries and recovery) and ITN Charleston Trident, which provides a transportation solution for seniors and the visually impaired.

Edisto Island will be celebrating the return of the loggerhead sea turtles to South Carolina beaches. The one-day festival will feature information booths, exhibits, arts and crafts, and more.

Skate for Hope

Break out your best hippie-wear for a ’60s-style skate. Benefiting Jaycee Camp Hope, a statewide residential camp for mentally handicapped citizens ages 8 and over, this event is all about having a good time for a cause. Admission costs cover basic skate rental.

Txakoli Celebration

After taking a year off, the Txakoli Celebration “returns to its roots” and returns to Charleston. Txakoli, pronounced cha-co-LEE, is a slightly sparkling, very dry white wine produced in the Spanish provinces of the Basque Country and is the quintessential wine of tapas bars in that region. This year, the event aims to tie in all cultural aspects of Basque, from music to food, art to drink. Cory Burke of the Green Door will prepare foods inspired by traditional Basque cuisine while winemaker Ignacio Ameztoi pours samples and shows folks how to drink out of the porron (a glass wine pitcher). There will be Basque-inspired games such as “Farmers and Fishermen,” a porron drinking contest, music by Andre Tamers and more. Proceeds will benefit Charleston Waterkeepers.

Charleston Gun and Knife Show

Swap, buy, sell or browse the hundreds of tables of shooting and hunting gear that will be on hand at the Charleston Gun and Knife Show. Running over the weekend, the event offers patrons a chance to peruse 300 tables of guns, knives, ammo, surplus, reloading supplies and shooting accessories from some of South Carolina’s biggest dealers.
