Local restaurants to host A Community United dinner to benefit shooting victims’ families

Jonathan Swartz and Catherine Ochoa of Mount Pleasant comfort each other as they pay their respects less than a week after nine people were killed at Emanuel AME Church.

When tragedy strikes Charleston, we’ve learned that our community responds with love, support and a constant echo of the question, “How can I help?” Musicians have held benefit concerts, artists have helped interpret the emotional aftermath through public displays, companies across the state have donated thousands of dollars. Now, local restaurants are doing their part by hosting a special dining event, A Community United, to benefit families of the nine victims of the mass shooting at Emanuel AME Church. The Macintosh, Indaco and more than 50 other establishments in the local food and beverage industry will participate in the tasting event and silent auction. All the proceeds will be donated to the cause. The Mark Sterbank Group, a collection of jazz artists, and Lowcountry Voices, a gospel choir, will perform live at the event. There also will be a program for community and Emanuel AME church leaders to speak.

When: 6:30-9:30 p.m. Thursday
