Hogs for the Cause cancels Saturday event due to weather

Rodney Scott of Scott’s Bar-B-Que sops his barbecue at Hogs for a Cause held at the Grove at Patriots Point last year.

Hogs for the Cause, the barbecue cook-off and music festival scheduled for Saturday at Patriots Point, has been cancelled due to the heavy rain expected this weekend as Hurricane Joaquin makes its way north off the South Carolina coast.

“As difficult as this decision is, when considering current and future predicted weather putting this event on has become an impossibility,” organizers said in a written statement Thursday evening. “We are very disappointed that this year’s event will not take place, but we must take all precautions for the safety of our attendees, competitors, vendors and musicians.”

The second annual event featuring a cook-off between amateur and professional barbecue chefs had booked musical acts Dr. Dog, Nikki Lane, Lucero, Fly Golden Eagle and People’s Blues of Richmond.

Since ticket sales benefit families dealing with pediatric brain cancer, the organizers have asked those who purchased tickets in advance to consider what they paid as donations to the cause. However, they are developing a refund process for those who want their money back, according to the announcement.
