Bundle up and take holiday fun outside

The Inn at Middleton Place will host a Gingerbread House Workshop on Sunday.

While the holidays usually cause a bit of a slowdown in the events calendar, this year is an exception.

With Christmas just around the corner, there's still plenty of holiday fun for you to squeeze into your probably already busy schedule.

What: Third Thursday in Summerville is all about celebrating the holidays this month. In addition to art and merchant booths and specials at local shops and restaurants, the event will feature entertainment from Knightsville Elementary and Dubose Middle School, and a performance by Daft Concept in front of Town Hall. As a special treat this month, storyteller Tim Lowry will perform "A Christmas Carol" during a walking tour of Summerville's historic district staring at 5:30 p.m.

When: 5-8 p.m. Thursday

Where: Downtown Summerville

Price: Free; walking tour is $10

What: The Evening Artisans Market gets a makeover for the holidays. In addition to featuring local vendors (can you say last-minute shopping?), the event will feature live holiday music, a visit from Santa on Saturday and more.

When: 6:30-10:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday

Where: Charleston Market, S. Market Street, downtown Charleston

Price: Free

More Info: 327-5976 or www.thecharlestoncitymarket.com

What: The monthly Second Sunday on King Street expanded this month to include two additional dates, the final event happening this weekend. In this first-ever Fourth Sunday on King Street, the theme will again be holiday shopping, family gatherings, food and music. There will be carolers in period costume, strolling bagpipes, gift and shopping promotions and special dining on the street. Also making a special appearance (set up in front of Jim 'n' Nick's) will be pitmaster Rodney Scott of Scott's BBQ in Hemingway. Scott is kicking off his "Rodney in Exile tour" in Charleston; Scott's pit room was damaged in a fire a couple of days before Thanksgiving. He'll be serving up slow-cooked barbecue sandwiches for $5. A portion of the proceeds will go toward rebuilding Scott's pit room.

When: 1-5 p.m. Sunday

Where: King Street

Price: Free

What: One of the fun, interactive events in any holiday repertoire is building a gingerbread house. And even better is doing it somewhere other than your own home so you don't have to clean up the mess. Take advantage of the beauty at The Inn at Middleton Place as your kids get their hands dirty. Refreshments will be served and Santa may even make an appearance.

When: 1-5 p.m. Sunday

Where: The Inn at Middleton Place, 4290 Ashley River Road

Price: Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 3-14, free for those under three; gingerbread house kits are $8
