Another local event goes to the dogs

Last week, I kicked off this column by regaling readers with my love of dogs.

The Yappy Hour event at James Island County Park set to happen last week was canceled due to inclement weather. It has been rescheduled for May 29.

As the first event this week is dog-related, I'll save you from another round of puppy love and just jump right in.

This week, the Charleston County Park and Recreation Department kicks off the other dog-themed series: Pups, Yups & Food Trucks.

From 5-8 p.m. today, pick up your pup after work and head over to Palmetto Islands County Park in Mount Pleasant for an evening of socializing, live music and more.

Dave Landeo will perform as Cast Iron food truck serves up tasty treats. Outside coolers and alcohol are prohibited.

And remember, all pets must be leashed outside the dog park.

Admission to the event is free with the $1 gate charge.

Palmetto Islands County Park is at 444 Needlerush Parkway in Mount Pleasant. Call 795-4386 or go to for more information.

Another summer series kicking off over the next week is Freshfields Village's Starlight Cinema.

The free outdoor movie series begins at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday on the Village Green. Guests are encouraged to bring a beach chair or blanket.

Offering new releases and classic family films, the opening film will be "The Smurfs 2."

Gargamel is back stirring up trouble for the Smurfs, this time with some help from some mischief-makers known as the Naughties. In an attempt to harness the magical essence of the Smurfs, their adventures this time around takes them to Paris.

Freshfields Village is at the crossroads of Kiawah, Seabrook and Johns islands. For more information, go to

Also taking place at Freshfields Village, a series of free concerts will be held on the Village Green this weekend in honor of Memorial Day.

From 6-9 p.m. Friday through Sunday, Freshfields Village will host a high-energy band each night in a celebration of the unofficial start to summer.

On Friday, JAVA will perform. The sextet, which includes a lead guitar, saxophone, bass, drums, keyboard and vocalist, performs a variety of tunes, including jazz, '70s, beach, Motown, Top 40, '80s and more.

Saturday will see Suckerpunch perform pop, dance, R&B, '60s, rock and recent hits.

Sunday's concert will feature Gracious Day, which performs vintage and contemporary country.

Guests are encouraged to bring beach chairs or blankets. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

This week's Party at the Point is the Summer Kick Off, featuring The Blue Dogs with The Piedmont Boys.

Billed as Charleston's "premier happy hour concert series," the long-running annual summer concert series continues its 14th season Friday.

Held at the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina, 20 Patriots Point Road in Mount Pleasant, gates open at 5:30 p.m. with bands playing from 6:30-9:30 p.m.

Tickets are $5-$7. Free on-street parking is available, as is valet parking for $5. The event features $3 drafts while they last.
