The largest container ship to ever call on the Port of Charleston passed under the Ravenel Bridge at about 11:30 a.m.
The MSC Bruxelles is the first ship to call on Charleston that's capable of carrying the equivalent of more than 9,000 20-foot shipping containers, a standard industry measurement know as a TEU. The Bruxelles is a 9,200 TEU ship, due to dock at the Wando Terminal by 1 p.m.
The State Ports Authority points to the Bruxelles, which can draft up to 49 feet, as an illustration of why the shipping channel needs to be deepened. Currently, the channel is dredged to a federally-authorized depth of 45 feet and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is beginning a study on potential deepening. Ships requiring greater depth now travel in and out of port with the tides.
