Traffic was flowing again in downtown Charleston today after several streets were closed while SCE&G repaired a gas leak on Mary Street.

The fire department was called to the area of Meeting and Mary streets about 1:45 p.m. for a report of a smell of gas, Deputy Fire Chief John Tippett said.

"They found a leak that was larger than they thought," he said.

Fire and police officials closed portion of Meeting Street and several blocks around the intersection of Meeting and Mary.

The AT&T building and the Charleston School of Law were evacuated, police said.

Kim Everitt Asbill, a spokeswoman for the gas company, said its workers closed three valves and secured the leak at 2:30 p.m.

"There were some traffic issues while the crews worked, but the area is now clear and safe," Asbill said.

The fire department reopened the streets shortly before 3 p.m., Tippett said.
