Charleston City police are looking for the driver of a newer model, dark gray Jeep Grand Cherokee who reportedly was involved in an aggravated assault early Sunday downtown, attacking a man with a baseball bat.

The driver is described as a white male with olive complexion. He is between 5 foot, 7 inches and 5 foot, 9 inches tall, has a muscular build, and weighs approximately 210 pounds. He has short cropped dark hair and was wearing khaki shorts with a white or grey T-shirt.

A police incident report says the assault began after the driver and three pedestrians exchanged words. The driver exited the Jeep and attacked members of the group with a baseball bat, possibly giving one member of the group a broken rib, among other injuries.

Another member of the group was able to get control of the bat and then used it to strike the vehicle as the driver got back in and fled, the report states.

The vehicle was last seen headed north on Meeting Street from George Street with a broken front driver’s side window and a broken driver’s side headlight. The incident occurred at approximately 2:53 a.m.

Anyone with information about this incident can call Charleston Police at 577-7434 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
