The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce today launched an outreach effort to drum up more community support for the cruise industry.

Citing a recent study that estimates a $37 million economic impact from the leisure ships, the chamber said it plans to educate its members and investors and other community leaders on the reason to keep pleasure vessels coming to Charleston.

The program also calls for support of the State Ports Authority's efforts to build a new passenger terminal at the maritime agency's Union Pier property.
