ORLANDO, Fla. — The defense attorney for a Florida mother charged with killing her 2-year-old daughter says the toddler drowned in a swimming pool.

Defense attorney Jose Baez said Tuesday in opening statements that Casey Anthony loved her daughter and was a good mother.

The 25-year-old Anthony is charged with first-degree murder. If convicted, she could be sentenced to death. She has pleaded not guilty and says a baby sitter kidnapped the child.

Prosecutors said in their opening statement that Caylee died from duct tape placed over her mouth and nose.

Casey Anthony started crying when a prosecutor described the toddler's last known day in June 2008.
