Carjacking suspect was wanted for murder, wounding another man

A man who carjacked a family that had stopped to help him on Interstate 26 Sunday was already wanted for killing his girlfriend and wounding a man in Florida, authorities said Monday.

S.C. authorities caught Corey Jamaine Dozier, 31, after a car chase that ended near mile marker 194. He is charged in with failure to stop for blue lights, driving under suspension and two counts of armed robbery in South Carolina. He faces more serious charges in Jacksonville, where is he accused of murder in the death of his girlfriend, Sherry Desravines.

Jacksonville Police Lt. Rob Schoonover said Desravines, 27, and Dozier arrived at her home together on Sunday when Dozier confronted a man who was visiting the home. He said Dozier shot the man in the car and then turned and shot Desravines, the mother of his 3-year-old child, twice. She was found with a head wound in her backyard. The unidentified male victim drove himself to a hospital and was later released.

Dozier took off toward South Carolina in Desravines’ car.

A Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office incident report says Dozier met the description of a man who robbed a BP gas station in St. George. The car used in that robbery was a silver Ford Taurus that authorities later found wrecked at the Interstate 95 and Interstate 26 interchange

Authorities received a call at 8:14 a.m. about a man lying on the side of the interstate near mile marker 172 in Dorchester County, which is about three miles east of the I-95 and I-26 interchange.

Before authorities arrived, a family from Bowman stopped on the side of the road to help the man. The family told authorities the suspect pointed a gun at them and demanded they get out of their red Kia Sportage because he was taking it.

The family got out of the car and called 911 to give authorities a description of the vehicle.

A S.C. Highway Patrol trooper pursued the Kia eastbound on I-26. A Dorchester County sheriff’s deputy waited at the 194 mile marker where he deployed Stop Sticks that brought the car to a stop, according to the report.

Dozier was denied bond Monday afternoon.
