WISE COLUMN: Joseph's transforms into Eli's

Joseph’s on Meeting Street closed in late June after 13 years in that location. The site will reopen within a few weeks as Eli’s Table, the latest venture for the Charleston Hospitality Group.

The former site of Joseph's restaurant at 129 Meeting St. will become a new dining spot within three weeks.

Eli's Table is the newest venture for the Charleston Hospitality Group, which includes Market Street Saloon, Sam's Corner, Toast, Tabbuli and Charleston Downtown Limo.

Eli's Table has leased, with an option to purchase, the 2,050-square-foot restaurant with a garden dining area of about 1,030 square feet, according to Jennifer Davis of Domicile Real Estate Brokerage.

The restaurant, named after the son of the restaurant group's Chief Executive Officer Sam Mustafa, will serve fresh, local, Southern cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Brunch on Saturday and Sunday also is planned.

Kohl's call

Metro Charleston's newest Kohl's Department Store opens Sept. 28 in the former Walmart at Ashley Crossing Shopping Center in West Ashley. The Wisconsin-based retailer at 2245 Ashley Crossing Drive near Magwood Road will have 130 employees, It will mark its third store in the region. Others are in Mount Pleasant and Summerville.

Holiday helper

Five years after shelving its Christmas layaway program, retail giant Walmart has decided to bring it back, but it's not for every product and it has some fees attached to it. Starting Oct. 17, select toys and electronics can be placed on layaway with a $5 nonrefundable fee and 10 percent down. Items must be at least $15 each, and all layaways must total at least $50.

Items must be picked up by Dec. 16 to avoid a $10 cancellation fee. Layaway won't be allowed on "Black Friday," the day after Thanksgiving, and will not be offered on wireless phones that require contracts.

Third launch

Jack's Cosmic Dogs has landed at a new site in West Ashley.

The third location for the locally owned hot dog chain opened Monday at 817 St. Andrews Blvd. Other restaurants are at 2805 U.S. Highway 17 in Mount Pleasant and at 1531 Folly Road on James Island.

Hats off

The Hat Ladies of Charleston Semi-Annual Gently Used Hat Sale is set from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Consigning Women at 21 Magnolia Road in Avondale in West Ashley. A portion of the proceeds go to charity. It was originally announced for last weekend in error by shop owner Ann Gadsden-Shimer.
