The tail-finned dancers that drew a record number of visitors to the South Carolina Aquarium last year are returning to the Charleston attraction this spring.

The World Famous Mermaids of Florida’s Weeki Wachee Springs State Park will perform three shows daily from March 27 through April 5 in the Great Ocean Tank on the first floor of the aquarium.

For decades, the team of female entertainers have traveled to aquatic venues around the world to perform synchronized, underwater routines wearing elaborate fish-tailed costumes.

Their performances captivated the Charleston community during the mermaids’ first stint at the aquarium last year. Admission rates rose 60 percent and revenue rose more than 40 percent compared to the same nine-day period the year before.

Given the remarkable success of the shows, aquarium officials said they planned to keep booking the mermaids every year to help boost attendance, especially among local visitors.

“As we saw last year, few can resist the siren call of mermaids,” said Kevin Mills, aquarium president and chief executive officer. “We are excited to bring them back so we can inspire even more visitors to consider the importance of our oceans and the animals that live there.”
