Charleston RiverDogs part-owners Gene and Gretchen Budig of the Isle of Palms have been named the recipients of Dole Humanitarian Award from University of Kansas’ Department of Special Education.

He was chancellor of the university from 1981 to 1994.

The Budigs will be honored at a ceremony Friday at the Dole Institute of Politics. The award recognizes people with ties to Kansas who’ve helped improve the lives of people with disabilities.

While chancellor, Budig was supportive of KU’s special education department and other disability-related campus programs, Edward Meyen, a professor of special education, said in a statement.
