A Swiss company that’s one of the biggest maritime employers in the Charleston region is importing some more new jobs to the area.
Mediterranean Shipping Co. announced last week it is expanding its Mount Pleasant office. The container line will invest more than $1.7 million and create 30 jobs by adding a data recovery center at 700 Watermark Blvd.
Also, the company has purchased an adjacent property for use as “MSC University,” a training center for employees and managers.
“We look forward to expanding our footprint in the Charleston area and building on our previous success,” said Sergio Fedelini, vice president.
Mediterranean Shipping has received a $100,000 grant from the state Coordinating Council for Economic Development as reimbursement for some of its expansion-related expenses.
The East Cooper office is near U.S. Interstate 526 and Bowman Road. It houses the company’s South Atlantic headquarters and manages the shipping line’s port operations in Charleston, Savannah and Jacksonville, Fla.
The privately owned company was founded in 1970 and started sending its vessels to the Port of Charleston in 1993. It’s one of the State Ports Authority’s biggest customers.
The Geneva-based line moved into its $7 million headquarters on Watermark Boulevard from a smaller building on Long Point Road in Mount Pleasant in 2009. The company has more than 300 employees in the local area.
The carrier’s worldwide fleet of 444 ships can haul the equivalent of nearly 2.2 million 20-foot-long containers, according to its website.
