A longtime business in West Ashley has closed near another large shuttered storefront.
Ryan’s restaurant at 829 St. Andrews Blvd. shut its doors Thursday.
A sign on the door said the longtime restaurant is closed and no longer accepting deliveries.
The store was one of two the company closed in South Carolina. The other was in Lexington near Columbia.
Another Ryan’s remains open in Summerville.
Ryan’s parent company, Ovation Brands, said it was acquired by Food Management Partners of San Antonio, Texas, in August and the decision was made to close 74 underperforming restaurants under the company’s umbrella. In addition to Ryan’s, those restaurants include Old Country Buffet, Hometown Buffet, Fire Mountain and Country Buffet. None of those are in the Charleston area.
“We have continued to execute former management’s operating plan to stabilize and enhance the performance of the company,” said Peter Donbavand, vice president of business development. “However, based on ongoing assessments of individual restaurants, it is necessary to shutter locations for the continued viability of the brands and our employees.”
He said the company plans to continue operating the remaining Ovation Brands’ restaurants “as they are financially viable.”
Employees were offered jobs at remaining stores, where the company said it is adding staff to increase customer service.
“We know that these decisions are not easy, however, we strongly believe that this direction is best for the long-term health of all brands,” Donbavand said.
The darkened Ryan’s sits adjacent to a former Food Lion, which closed in 2013. Another grocery chain was looking at the site, but those plans seem to have stalled.
The West Ashley Ryan’s site is owned by an arm of Spirit Realty Capital of Scottsdale, Ariz., according to Charleston County property records. The company did not immediately respond to requests for comment on plans for the building.
