405 Murray Blvd. — Broad house with good acre of land evokes rural living while close to Summerville

The Farmdale neighborhood has a couple of unusual features. None of the 10 houses are much alike and the main road is horseshoe-shaped.

But arguably the most distinct attraction is something else. The community is right off well-traveled Dorchester Road yet feels quiet and secluded.

That’s a selling point for 405 Murray Blvd., a house in the Farmdale neighborhood on the market for $359,000. It is being sold by the owners, Dr. Arnold and Susen Shapiro.

Built in 1989, the 3,054-square-foot house is notable for a steeply-pitched roof, covered walkway to a two-car garage with finished room above, double-vehicle carport and an acre-and-a half of land.

Susen Shapiro says the three-bedroom home with two full baths and two powder rooms is in “an informal neighborhood.” The house is set back 200 feet “for maximum privacy,” she says.

The fenced back yard touts tall live oaks and a fig tree that produced 15 pounds of figs last summer, she says. There are also two small sheds and a greenhouse with electricity and water.

She says the two-story house would appeal to a family, what with three bedrooms and expansive yards front and back. “I tell you what, this home would be great for anybody who has pets,” she says.

The entrance is up a few steps to a three-sided wraparound porch. Inside is a front foyer that leads to the living room, accentuated by a Cathedral ceiling and oversized triangular windows. Distinguishing the living area is a wood-burning stove. If it were disconnected, the wood-burning fireplace with wood mantel and tile surround is workable. The living room has tile floors: None of the main house is carpeted.

French doors lead from the living room to avaulted sunroom with inlaid wood floors. Skylights keep the sunroom bright, and it offers views of the back yard through large windows.

There’s an office to the left of the sunroom that in turn has an opening to the extra-large master suite. Clothes closets are on either side of the entrance. The master bedroom is plenty big enough for a king-sized bed and has more than adequate closet space. Double vanities with granite countertops; a large shower; and cabinet space mark the bathroom. The suite can be closed off from the rest of the house.

The kitchen, sporting stainless steel appliances and a host of drawers and cabinets, is to the east side of the living room. A stand-out feature is an extra-large 36-inch Viking six-burner stove. The dining room is adjacent to the cooking area toward the front of the house. On the other side of the kitchen is a utility room. There’s a powder room between the foyer and dining area.

Upstairs are two guest bedrooms at either end of a hallway that overlook the living room. In the middle of the hall is a full bath with tub. The house has separate heating and cooling systems upstairs and down.

Also provided at 405 Murray Blvd. is an alarm system, and there are security lights on the home and the garage, Arnold Shapiro says.

From the street, the driveway runs up to a wide parking area in front of the close-to-450-square-foot garage. Arnold Shapiro says the garage’sprodigious work bench, which extends across half of the back wall, is staying with the house. There’s a generator hookup to run a well pump.

Stairs lead to the heated and air conditioned 384-square-foot FROG, which contains a half-bath, attic storage and a carpeted open room that “could be a fourth bedroom for a teen, game room or office,” she says.

Another plus is the Dorchester Road proximity. The house is about 10 minutes from downtown Summerville and 15 miles to Charleston International Airport and Charleston Air Force Base.

A one-year homeowners’ warranty is included in the purchase, Susen Shapiro says. Agents are protected 3 percent, she adds.

The property, she says, would appeal to “people who like it kind of informal but not in the country.”

To locate the house, get on Dorchester Road between Old Orangeburg Road and U.S. Highway 17A. Head west on Interstate 26 and take exit 209B, which is Ashley Phosphate Road. Turn left on Ashley Phosphate and follow it to Dorchester Road. Take a right on Dorchester and continue for about 10 miles, crossing Bacon’s Bridge Road after about eight miles. Shortly past the Old Orangeburg Road turnoff, make a right on Murray Boulevard. Just ahead on the left is 405 Murray Blvd.
