Mulberry Place — Two-level apartment complex west of the Ashley matches moderate price, roomy perks

Mulberry Place Apartments is a rental complex split into two sections off Mulberry Street west of the Ashley (Jim Parker/Staff 5-15-12).

Decent size, low cost and convenient setting can be a popular triple benefit for people searching for a rental, especially when they are on a tight budget.

If those are desired features, then one West Ashley community with leasable two-story residences could be worth a visit.

Mulberry Place is a townhome apartment village a few blocks from U.S. Highway 17 South and a street away from Wappoo Road.

While lacking amenities such as a swimming pool, the complex offers spacious dwellings priced at $660 a month for two-bedroom residences and $760 a month for three-bedroom choices.

They all possess a slew of indoor attractions such as well-equipped kitchens with dishwasher, stove and refrigerator; large closets; porches; and private backyard patios.

Meanwhile, each unit has its own front entrance, rather than within a building along an enclosed but still outdoor hallway.

“It’s more private than a regular apartment,” says Diane Shakir, property manager with Mount Pleasant-based Varner Commercial Property Consultants Inc. According to its website, the investment and property management venture oversees a half-dozen apartment complexes — including Mulberry Place — from Charleston to Garden City.

The complex is split into two side-by-side sections. The 40 residences come in two basic designs: the two-bedroom dwelling is 1,069 to 1,091 square feet, while the three-bedroom style is 1,309-1,329 square feet.

The apartments sport a living room, bath and breakfast area attached to the kitchen downstairs while all the bedrooms and a bath are upstairs. An alluring attraction of each rental is a first-floor laundry with washer and dryer hookup, Shakir says.

Likely tenants include couples, small families and individuals or roommates.

From a convenience standpoint, Mulberry Place is close to public transportation, Interstate 526 and shopping and dining in Charleston, the management company notes in a brochure.

The community is located at 1661-1687 Mulberry St., just west of Savannah Highway.

Heading south, take the highway past the Avondale area, proceed close to three miles to Wappoo Road and turn right. Go less than a mile and make a right on Three Oaks Avenue, just past St. Andrews Middle School. Follow the avenue for a short distance, where it bears sharply right and then left. When the road straightens out, Mulberry Place is on the right, on what becomes Mulberry Street.
